Licensing

Last updated: 15 September 2026

Short version. Nothing on this site is licensed for reuse. The code is not open source — all rights are reserved by the operator — and no licence of any kind is granted for the compiled calendar data. That data comes from public authorities, government departments and school websites, each with its own terms. Check the source of whatever you want to reuse, or ask us. This page is a factual record, not legal advice.

The site's code

The source code that generates this website is not open source. All rights are reserved by the operator, and no licence — open-source or otherwise — is granted for it. There is no LICENSE file granting rights, the repository is not public, and nothing on this page should be read as permission to copy, modify, redistribute or reuse the templates, components, stylesheets, build scripts, data files or generated output that make up this site.

This does not restrict reading the site: the dates on these pages are facts, and anyone may read them, quote them and link to them — see what you may do below. What is withheld is any right to take the code that produces those pages and use it elsewhere, and any right to redistribute the compiled dataset they are built from.

Where the data comes from

Every calendar date on this site is compiled from a source that publishes it, and each page names its own source and links to it. Those sources fall into four groups:

Dubai — KHDA school calendars

223 of the 349 school records come from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which publishes each school's approved academic calendar.

Public status: Official published information. The dataset's own provenance note requires redistribution terms to be verified before commercial use — quoted in full below.

Singapore — Ministry of Education

School calendar data from moe.gov.sg covers the 8 Singapore school records.

Public status: Official published information.

Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Shenzhen — school websites

119 school records were compiled from each school's own published calendar.

Public status: Factual data published by the schools themselves. A calendar date is a fact and facts are not copyrightable as such, but the compilation can carry rights, and individual schools may state terms of use.

National and regional education authorities

93 regional calendars across 36 countries, taken from the authority named on each region page — for example the German Kultusministerkonferenz, the UK Department for Education, state education departments in the US and Australia, and provincial ministries in Canada.

Public status: Mostly official published information. Government terms of use vary: some publish under an open licence, others reserve rights, and the site has not audited each one individually.

The dataset's own provenance note

Recorded against the school dataset itself, this is the note that a blanket open licence would contradict. It is reproduced here verbatim rather than paraphrased:

Dubai data © KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) — official published academic calendars; Singapore MOE public data from moe.gov.sg; international-school data from each school's published calendar. Verify redistribution terms before commercial use.

What you may do

  • Read, cite and link. Anyone may read every page, quote the dates, and cite this site — see the dataset page for a suggested citation.
  • Subscribe to any feed. The .ics feeds are published for exactly that; nothing about subscribing implies a redistribution right over the underlying data.
  • Use the official source directly. For most regions the authority that publishes the dates is named and linked on the region page. Where it publishes under an open licence, that licence is yours to rely on — and it is the only grant with a clear basis.

What is not granted

No licence is granted for the compiled dataset. This site publishes the dates; it does not license the compilation. Every machine-readable output — the JSON export, the .ics files, the PDFs — is covered by the same position, and none of them carries terms permitting redistribution, resale or reuse in another product as they stand.

  • No redistribution licence for the compiled dataset — not for the JSON export, not for the .ics files, not for the PDFs. Reusing the compilation in another product requires checking the terms of each contributing source first.
  • No commercial-use grant. The KHDA-sourced portion in particular carries an explicit instruction to verify redistribution terms before commercial use.
  • No relicensing. Nothing here lets a third party sublicense this data under terms of their own choosing.
  • No code reuse. The licence position on the site's own source code is the one stated above: not open source, all rights reserved.

If you need a clear answer

Tell us what you want to use and for what, via the contact form, and we will either confirm the position or point you at the source whose terms govern it. Requests about specific schools should name the school; requests about a region are easiest to answer alongside the source URL shown on that region's page.

This page is a factual description, not legal advice, and not a substitute for a licence. It records what the code and the data provenance notes state. The terms under which this site may license the data it compiles are the operator's decision, to be taken with legal advice; the operator's current decision, recorded above, is not to grant one — and a page saying so is neither a licence nor a legal opinion.
