Planning Tips for 2026 Berlin School Holidays
🗺️ 16 Länder, rotated summer holidays
Germany staggers the six-week summer holidays across the 16 Bundesländer on a rotating schedule set by the KMK so no region breaks first two years running — Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are always last (late July-September).
⛷️ Ski breaks live in the south
The southern states take a two-week "Winterferien"/Faschingsferien break in February; northern states instead get a shorter spring break around Easter.
🌉 Bewegliche Ferientage add surprises
Many states let schools place "movable holiday days" (bewegliche Ferientage) around church festivals, extending weekends into mini-breaks — the school's own calendar lists them.
🏛️ KMK publishes years ahead
The Standing Conference (Kultusministerkonferenz) fixes all Länder's holiday dates several years in advance — you can plan a German trip three years out from the official Ferienkalender.

Are school holidays the same in all 16 German Bundesländer?
No — and they are not meant to be. The Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) staggers the summer holiday start between the states so that the whole country does not travel at once, and each state's education ministry sets its remaining dates. For the school year 2026/27 the Sommerferien 2027 begin on 28 June 2027 in Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland but only on 2 August 2027 in Bavaria; autumn, winter and spring breaks also differ by state.
Why do Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg always start their summer holidays last?
That is the KMK's long-term rotation, agreed years in advance: the two southern states take the latest slot. In 2027 Bavaria starts on 2 August and Baden-Württemberg on 29 July; in 2028 Bavaria starts on 31 July and Baden-Württemberg on 27 July, while Schleswig-Holstein is already out on 24 June 2028. The trade-off is that their summer holidays also end latest, in early to mid-September.
What are the February school holidays in Germany (ski break)?
Depending on the state they are called Winterferien or Faschingsferien, and they are the reason a February ski trip books out early. In the school year 2026/27: Berlin has 1-6 February 2027, Hamburg a single day on 29 January 2027, and Bavaria's Faschingsferien run 8-12 February 2027. Not every state has them — Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia do not — and in 2027/28 they move, e.g. Saarland 21-29 February 2028.
